Successful management of any public building draws upon a wide range of skills. Cumbria’s churches are fortunate in that there are many skilled and experienced people involved in their management. However training may be required to keep abreast of latest legislation or to acquire and develop new skills, particularly when a new project is proposed. There are a number of providers of free or affordable training courses in the County. See our events page for forth coming courses and seminars as well as those below.
Faith in Maintenance The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) runs one day training courses specifically for volunteers responsible for maintaining historic places of worship. If no course is available in Cumbria there is usually one in an adjacent county. The course focuses on preventative maintenance and is well worth attending - many of the simple procedures covered could save your church a large repair bill in the future. For dates of upcoming courses visit FiM on the SPAB website.
Cumbria Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) Cumbria CVS offer a wide range of courses for people involved in the management of voluntary organisations, which are highly relevant to people involved with running churches. Skills covered include funding, administration etc. For more details see their training calender.
Local Colleges If you are looking to develop less specialised skills then the courses offered by local colleges are often very relevant. For example they offer courses in various aspects of computing, business skills or first aid. You can link through to the websites of local colleges through this Cumbria County Council page.
